How to Remove the Background from an Image in Canva
Follow these simple steps to remove the background from a photo and create clean, professional workout posts, promo graphics, and client features using Canva’s Background Remover tool.
How to Remove the Background from a Photo (with Canva Pro)
- Upload Your Photo to Canva
Start by uploading the image you’d like to edit into your Canva account. - Add the Photo to a Design
Drag your uploaded image into your design or template. - Remove the Background
Click Edit Image in the top toolbar, then select BG Remover. Canva will automatically isolate your subject—whether it’s an athlete, client, or product—from the background for a clean, professional look.
How to remove the background from a photo (without Canva Pro)
- If you don’t have Canva Pro, you can still remove the background from a photo for free using remove.bg.
- Go to remove.bg.
- Click Upload Image and select your workout or promo photo from your computer.
- The site will automatically remove the background for you.
- Click Download to save your edited image as a PNG (with a transparent background).
- Open Canva and navigate to the Uploads section
- Click Upload Files and select your saved transparent image.
- Finally, drag and drop your uploaded image into your Canva design and position it where it fits best.
How to add an outline to your photo
- Click on the photo you want to add an outline to.
- Go to Edit → Shadows → Outline.
- Scroll down and adjust the outline color and thickness until your subject stands out and pops in your social posts.
How to reposition your photo in front of or behind text
- Click on the photo or text you want to adjust.
- Click Position in the top toolbar.
- Under the Arrange tab, select:
- Forward to bring the element in front.
- Backward to move it behind another element.
- Adjust until the photo and text layer together for a professional, eye-catching layout for your posts or promo flyers.
How to add cutouts with outlines to your fitness graphics
- In Canva, search for an image (e.g. “trainer with dumbbells”) under Elements → Photos.
- Click on the image → click Edit Photo → select Background Remover. 💡 If you don’t have Canva Pro, refer to the steps on how to remove the background using free tools.
- Once the background is removed, scroll to Shadows → Outline.
- Change the outline color to white or your brand color.
- Adjust the outline thickness as needed to fit Instagram posts, story stickers, or ads.
- To reuse the same outline style, click the styled image → click Copy Style (paint roller icon) → then click another image to apply it.
